Those recently-posted videos are amazing; they demonstrate that You Tube becomes a beguiling time machine when the subject is your life as it was fifty-five years ago.

Moreover, I was pleased to see the recent photo of Bubby Horowitz. We exchanged e-mails correspondence shortly after the website was established. However, I hadn't seen him since 1958.

Best wishes, Bob

there are 2 short films of Tarigo from the summers that i was there-shot on 16mm-they lost alot of quality in going down to quicktime-but you can see them on youtube-they're set to 'private' so you have to have an account on youtube to view. Just do a search for Camp Tarigo-they're in2 parts-limited to 50 people.
although they're basically of me, of course, shot by my parents & grandparents, you can see in color the boys & girls campus, milk bar, mess hall, wreck hall, the lake, etc.
enjoy

during the summers or 1939&1940 I was the camp employee who did every thing. Weekends i drove to NY and picked up supplies for the week. To campers to other camps to play games. Pacy and Lou were the owners and lou's wife was one of the nicest pwerson I ever met. I was only 16 & 17 but lied and had a phony chauffers license. It was one of the best times in my life. i enlisted in the air force in 1942 and afer the war I got married and Lou invited my wife and me to spend a week or so at the camp. Lou and pacy two great guys. I am now 88. Is any of the Saltsmann or wilder children around? good to find the page.

I only spent about six weeks in the summer of '69 at Ta-Ri-go, but it was a memorable six weeks. I was basically the camp's truck driver and counselor for the waiters. I really don't remember any names but the guys were a lot of fun.

I took the job because my girlfriend - an artist - was spending the summer in Woodstock with her mom and I wanted to be close by. Later that summer I was summoned for my draft physical (luckily I was 4F due to a heart murmur) and while I was down in NYC some friends convinced me to go to the Woodstock festival, so I phoned in my resignation from the city. I felt bad about that, but I was 22 years old without much direction at the time. 43 years later, I still remember Ta-Ri-Go, and it was nice to find this website.

WHAT BEGAN AS A WELCOME TO FLORIDA LUNCH FOR THREE OF US, TURNED INTO THE FIRST ANNUAL REUNION OF 10 TARIGOITES, CIRCA 1940'S AND 1950'S.

FOR THESE "GENTLEMEN OF A CERTAIN AGE", WHO OFTEN HAVE DIFFICULTY REMEMBERING WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY, IT WAS QUITE REMARKABLE HOW WE SPENT OVER FOUR HOURS REMEMBERING THE MOST MINUTE DETAILS FROM BACK THEN.

THE EVENT, WHICH WE AGREED WOULD BECOME AN ANNUAL GATHERING, HAD US "ANCIENTS" TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE AND STORIES FROM 60+ YEARS AGO, AS IF THEY HAD JUST HAPPENED.

WE HOPE THAT THOSE READING THIS "LOVE LETTER" TO THE "HILLS OF HEALTH" PASS IT ON TO OTHER TARIGO MEN, AND WOMEN.....WHO WERE NOT THERE FROM '47 TO 54,AND HOPE THAT MORE OF YOU CAN JOIN US IN THE FUTURE...

what a great 10 years, bumped into Erwin Klugerman about 25 years ago and have been playing tennis with and against him since. It turns out that Bobby Cohen set up a mini reunion in Delray Beach on 29 December '11. Looking forward to seeing him, Bubby Horowitz, Erwin, Joel Sprayregen, Herby Kozlow, Donny Clarick,Norman Berlin and a few others, all after 60 years, with the exception of Erwin.
Would like to see Dave Beldner, Eric May, Jerry Silverstein (counselor). The name "Goolie" keeps popping into my mind, but I don't remember his last name. Have a Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After being fired as Timberlake's social director on Visiting Day, 1969, I joined Tarigo's staff and had the time of my life. Aside from Jack P. (my former E.R. neighbor), I wonder if anyone remembers me? (Ellen, Sue, Diane Yuk-Yuk). It would surely be fun to chat.

http://www.camptarigo.com/guest_new/public/t_img-1304560043.jpgSad News... I just googled Shelley Davis, my girlfriend when I was a Senior and we went to Niagara Falls. (I threw up on the Maid of the Mist and she comforted me.) She became a lawyer and helped the Farmworkers, etc. She died of breast cancer on Dec. 12, 2008. I will post her obituary on the Nostalgia Page of the website. She was a brilliant and sensitive person with a great loving heart.

Hi Irene-i remember you well and count me in on meeting at Gales for a soda-i don't live far from Tarigo.

PVaKtrIa:
In awe of that anwesr! Really cool!

icviGvVaeRO:
more then years of knowing could .Second I bet your land does Not bdreor Winston Farms.. I am not worried about just myself but my town in whole . If you could show me where money is being made that goes back into the community not just pockets of the Shalers, promotors( not from here) .Show me after all the costs of hiring more police, security, extra toll takers, busing from spot to spot , the drugs, the alcohol . ( and dont try and tell me it wont be here . I know better) Not to metion traffic .. YOu tell me it to be fair to the wild life ( that has not returned to its fullness since the first one here)?? .oh and even our road and proerty that was destroyed by the last one my cellar never flooded till the last concert because land was moved. ,but you dont see . Show where this concert is going to help out taxes?? that one I dont get .. As far as being one of the coolest towns in America ,It still is we don't need in papers it is our TOWN . These things I have listed would not just impact me directly they would IMPACT the whole town . SO yeah I guess I am being narrow minded when I see man who wanted to sell to a casino, sell out to a medical company that would pollute our waters and land . It is you who is small minded .. Clean water , freash air , and good soil to plant food in is to much to ask ?? what was I thinking ??? As far as the wild life I guess I will help pick up thier portion of the taxes ( what a joke) .. OH and you accuse me of labeling someone after one meeting , He was mean ,and his family who hunts this property has no regards for thers property they get dropped off early in the morning and walk through our properties push the deer to a certain spot to shoot them . That is not a person or people who I would want to be friends with it is UNETHICAL when hunting . and illegal .(and yes I am a hunter too but follow the rules ) . As pat has said the proerty is run down terribly . If Mr. SChaller wants to help our community and make money heres a idea. Fix the houses up make it a working farm . have volanteers, pigs, goats, cows, planted food. all done by th ecommunity . Rent rooms out and let peole live and see how a really farm is . He will get farm tax right off, He will make money off the rooms. and the food could go to families in the commuinty who need it. We could have enough cattle there produce enough milk for the whole town. He could have guided snow mobile trails, bike trials, Local artists coudl display and sell their art, local music , weekend picnics . But now you tell me Im narrow minded and not looking out for my Saugerties brother and sisters interest. I bet to if we wanted to have a bike week here like Laconia and Daytona you would be the first to put it down .. OH and who ever hide under my name and put Mary hates a party .. Well I guess you never been to one of our parties huh ???? Jeff, my husband and I more then willing to meet and discuss our differances over coffee.. maybe we could come to understand each other better.. Yeah it is the narrow minded one who is reaching out the olive branch ..

Rick: I think Irene has the seed of a great idea. In addition to running your fabulous guided tours of Lower Manhattan, you could run them of Tarigo. As I recall you saying, the biggest drawback to the weekend reunions was that, due to the wide disparity in ages, many of the campers had never known one another. You could solve that problem by organizing the tours into small groups, say 15 to 25, based on the years they went to camp, and run multiple excursions throughout the summer in the form of day trips. Those wishing to stay overnight could provide for their own accomodations. This way you wouldn't be on the hook financially, at least not to the degree you were for the reunions, and you might even make a (well-deserved) profit.

That's great news about your book. Please put me down for a (autographed) copy.

rick`s recent e-mail about the museum and neg nord nud prompted me to sit down and write some camp stuff.some months ago after a recent move i found a photo from 1960 of perry koslow, ira povell, my first counselors, howie rabinowitz and jack bregman( crazy nature counselor, all sitting with their shades looking as they thought cool.i intend to go into some storage and try to find my old picture albums from camp and send once found to the museum.i was one of the upper seniors who was part of the creation the neg nord nud, just as gary describes on the web page.i can`t believe it still goes on.rick, thanks for your hard work and dedication in preserving our camp history.

Today I found out that a woman who I have known for years, and am very good friends with is the widow of Bobby Singer! This is so crazy and random. We were having lunch today w/ a group of our friends when the subject of camp came up and I started to wax poetic about my wonderful summers at camp. Someone at the table asked me the name of the camp and I said "oh you wouldn't know it, it was a very small camp in upstate NY, called Camp Tarigo". My Friend Donna turned to me and said "my husband went to Camp Tarigo"! It took me a minute to put all the pieces together and then I realized OMG your husband was Bobby Singer...I got goose bumps all over...I remember Bobby Singer very well. Dr. Robert Singer died of ALS several years ago, and my friend Donna runs a charity for ALS in his honor here in Miami...what a strange, small world this is!!!!

As I get lder my memories become more sketchy. Uncle Pacy was indeed one of my uncles. The photographs are powerful triggers that jog those deeply embedded neuron that still fire occasionally. I also remember the color war songs and the alma marter. You could imagine the grins and the hoots from my family when I found myself in the group photos. They were almost embarrassed for me when I started singing the various songs.

I remember the good times, in fact, it was there that I first heard Simon and Garfunkel over the loudspeaker. I will have to try and make it up there at some point as I drive to Buffalo to visit my son.

The worst Christmas pneesrt Hmmm let me think. This is a tough one. Perhaps the worst Xmas pneesrt I've received was when I was a little kid and my grandma gave me socks and underwear. Now don't get me wrong they're great just not what kids are hoping for. That's the sort of stuff I'd appreciate now. I'm a lot older and that's a very useful gift at this stage of my life. But as a kid I wanted walkie talkies and smurf radios and radio controlled cars. Now I'd settle for socks and undies. Lol what a terrific question Evie!!! Keep it upJeremy Stersky

Right on! In fact I've done some mystery shopnipg of a different kind. Somehow folks got a hold of me via my email address and started contacting me to do some mystery shopnipg at the local Harley Davidson outlet. I went and did it. It is a little weird going in to interview folks and then actually get paid for that by the company. Takes a little while to get your cash from doing mystery shopnipg requests though. I realize that you're talking about something entirely different I've done Bingo Mystery Shopper quests before too!! Great job Evie Jeremy

Jack, Lenni, Steven, Ellen and myself, along with most of our family members, went to TARIGO today. We took pictures by sniders (of course singing Hiking on the highway as we walked there), at the lake (now Lori Stamford's pond), at the Tarigo girl's basketball courts, at the Tarigo sign and last but not least took pictures by the fireplace where the rec hall used to be. Lori, Scott and David Stamford's mom brought us by Michael Lewis' campgrounds where Michael and Beaver shared stories with us. We then went to the Fleischmans museum where they have a wall of Tarigo pictures. After Tarigo we went to Woodstock. Memories, memories, memories.....What a great day!!! This was up there with the Carol King and James Taylor Concert. I went to the concert with Susan Glatter, Randy Klein, Ellen Pinsky (and we saw Janie Halper). Please...Let's Have a Reunion!!!!!!!

The Fleischmanns Museum has a separate area for Camp Tarigo memorabilia. Please consider donating any camp memorabilia you may have to the museum so that many of the old campers who come by the museum can appreciate them.(Any photos, plaques from the social hall, song sheets, etc.) will be preserved for future generations. You can contact the museum on line.

just spent a wonderful day with mike holzer remembering 50+ years ago, and catching up to date.

our one disagrement was on the cost of camp in 1947. i said $500...mike guessed much lower.

can someone with a mind that still works
tell us who was correct.

Rick:
If you go to the TARIGO Nostalgia Trivia Page you will see an actual bill for 1961 and it was $695 per camper. I cannot extrapolate back to 1947, but $500 seems in the ballpark.

Tony Cohen:
From '53-55 the cost was six hundred twenty bills (from lyrics...'tarigo tarigo in the fleischmann hills, all you need to go there is....)

Mike, That's a shock to learn about Donny. I reconnected with him through this website--after 50 plus years--and we had a lengthy phone conversation during which he brought me up to date on everybody, including that he and you have remained friends all these years. I will think of him whenever anybody mentions Michigan football.

I worked at Ta-Ri-Go in the summer of 1969. I was the counselor in the waiters' bunk as well as a camp driver. I took the job, because my girlfriend and her mother - both artists - were living in Woodstock and I wanted to be up there too.

In early August I was called to Manhattan for my draft physical, and when I was declared 4F I was so excited I never came back to camp, heading to the Woodstock Festival instead, which kind of pissed off the owners, whose names I forget.

So I apologize to them now. I wish I could remember some of the waiters and campers I knew that summer, but I basically only remember a counselor named Marcella. She was beautiful!

As you can see, I've upgraded the look of our Website. We just passed over 12,300 hits from mostly former campers. So I guess people are still enjoying the site and it is helping old friends find each other. The program also removes @ and . from your email address so that spammers cannot use programs to gather them for spamming. If you have any other ideas about the site, please let me know.

I remember on the hikes back up the hill from town, the old camp truck would come along and we would all climb on. We probably could have walked faster then the truck went, but it was great at the time.

http://www.camptarigo.com/guest_new/img/smilies/a1.gifI spent one, maybe two years at TA RI GO. I was reminded of it yesterday, when I saw the lyrics to "Hiking on the Highway", which I think was a song from TA RI GO.

I don't remember anybody, but I remember the cabins.

Happy 40th Anniversary. Was watching programs on Woodstock this weekend. It brought back memories of our 1969 senior boys group, "The Whiz Kids." What a great summer. Monty

easiest but not cost effective is get a moible phone that u can link to your laptop and use it as a modem. I use a samsung v200for this. Alternativly, get a pda type moible, but not from 3G as they limit what you can do, and access to the internet is one of them.for using your laptop at home, buy a wireless router (assuming you use broadband/adsl(there are 2 types of router) and a wireless usb stick.please be more specific with your last question.

Excellent items from you, man. I've take note your stuff previous to and you're smilpy extremely magnificent. I actually like what you've received here, really like what you're saying and the way through which you assert it. You're making it entertaining and you continue to care for to keep it wise. I cant wait to learn much more from you. This is really a wonderful website.

Great memories. One years as a waiter and one as a counselor. I remember the walks up the hill after movie night in town. Tarigo's also where I got introduced to the Doors.(hearing "The End" at age 17 was a trip). Would appreciate hearing from anyone else around in those years.

I think back to my camp years with great pleasure. I remember standing on the porch of the arts and crafts building listening to the news about the A bombing of Hiroshima. I now have a home in Roxburt NY and pass Tarigo whenevr going or returning to NJ. My kids and grandkids use it in the winter and ski at Bellayre and Plattekill mountains. I guess I am one of the oldest Tarigo alumni.

My family had a vacation home in Fleischmanns in the 70's and 80's, and in the early 80's we stumbled upon Camp Tarigo while motorcycling through the woods. The camp at that time was still very much in-tact, but completely abandoned. We were always facinated with the camp, and the history of it, but were never able to find any information. It's really exciting to find this website. When we first discovered it we spent days exploring the camp. Over the years that followed the camp was vandalized and most of the camp equipment was subsequently stolen. And I was sad when the property was developed. Keep up the great website!

In 1960, the color war teams were the Vikings and Romans. The Vikings, led by Perry Koslow, won the war. Perry was a memorable general.

I have very fond memories of Camp. I still remember "Uncle" Jerry getting us bunch of "ball players" out into the woods for a hike with the hope that we would find an Indian burial ground. It was a brilliant ploy and we had a great time. I also remember learning the Hebrew grace, that I did not know, from a fellow camper on the way down to the dining room.

I thought that I was the only one who didn't know the blessing over the bread. It took me half the summer to learn it.

Stumbled upon this site by accident. I played the piano for shows and color wars over two fun summers, often under the direction of Joe Allen [GREASE, WEST SIDE STORY]. The Allens were distant relatives. In 1974, showing sympathies to Patty Hearst, et. al., the TaRiGo Liberation Army, a band of dissatisfied counselors and staff, lashed out by taking over... [something; was it the flagpole?]. During late 80s, while visiting friends in Woodstock, I visited the site and saw the demolition in progress. In the mid-90s, while watching a friend's friends' slide show, I realized that they built a house on the site of my TaRiGo bunk. Currently practicing as an actury consulting to multiemployer pension funds in NYC area [and still playing the piano]. Cheers.

Thank you Kathy Shenker for telling me about this website. I have very fond and vivid memories of Tarigo, and, like Kathy, I was the youngest camper there the first summer I went. I remember the way the bunks looked, how cold the lake water was first thing in the morning, the "bug juice" and chocolate milk and cookies after rest hour. And, of course, the plays -- Sound of Music, Cinderella, Peter Pan, etc... I was always on the color war team that lost, but it was still a highlight of the summer. The last night of every summer we always cried and sang "Friends, friends, friends, we will always be." How great that so many people have kept in touch.

IN 1963 I had the claim to fame of being the youngest camper @ Ta-ri-go not having yet been to first grade. I loved Ta-ri-go and no other camp quite compared. I still get goose bumps when I hear Beautiful Dreamer. I would love to hear from any of you who loved camp like I did. I still look for green and white Syracuse china cuz it reminds me of camp. The last time I was up there,Fleischmans looked a bit different with quite a sizable Hasidic community. I'd definitely try to make a reunion and would like to be on any lists. Go blue and Grey!

Just saw Richard Haas on the Daily Show last night. From All Around Camper at TARIGO to the National Security Council to the Daily Show. Not bad...

Bill Cooper:
I believe that it was the Colbert Report that Haas was on. What year was he All Around Camper?

Rick Landman:
Richard Haas was all around camper in 1966, I think. He is also on TV right now on CNN with Fareed Zakaria. It could have been Colbert and not The Daily Show.

Bill Cooper:
From his appearance on TV, he's still in pretty good physical shape.

any reunions in the near future?
Lori Goffner and I will be speaking this week.
I owe her a phone call.
I hope to set up a lunch or dinner.
Anyone interested in joining us?
This is the first summer I did not make it up to "Camp".
I anyone ever wants to take a trip up there, I will definitely join you.
I love reading all of your messages. Even If I do not know you....I know we all loved camp so much.
Have a great day
penny

So far it looks like the spamming has stopped now that you must see the random number below and type it in. So I am glad to see that we finally found Cindy Wadro... welcome back; and we can now use the Guestbook again without all the spam. Thank you Jeremy for fixing the problem.

These assholes who are hacking this website are truly demented. Can you just imagine how stupid they are and how miserable their lives must be if they consider this entertainment? Disgusting, revolting, repulsive, repugnant - all these words apply to them (if indeed there is more than one). I hope their lives become even more miserable as time progresses!

Rick Landman:
I try to clean up the spam about once a week. If you see alot just let me know. It is computer generated with programs. I do not think that they actually sit there and type the stuff in each entry. They think that it is cool to waste my time with cleaning things up.

I was in many of the musicals at Tarigo from '58-'62 and I wonder if anyone has any pics of any of these shows they can email me privately. I have the fondest memories of Tarigo and live not too far from the camp.
Appearing in those shows was a big kick for me and i'd love to hear from anyone who was in them with me as well-they were The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma,
and others in those years.
Would love to see some pix if available.

Bill Cooper:
During your first year at camp (1958), I played the lead in "Good News" opposite Elaine Halper, but I doubt if you were then old enough to play any role other than our love child.

michael Bitterman:
Bill Cooper-I don't remember GOOD NEWS. Did they do South Pacific that year or Carousel or Paint Your Wagon? I was in those-I was only 8 in '58. Was Steve Kurland the musical director do you recall?

Bill Cooper:
During '59 "Good News" was the first production, followed by "Pajama Game," the leads played by Marty Weinstein and Robin ??? (pretty blonde). I don't remember the name of the musical director, but he had dark hair and a slight build. He once said that he would've
landed a part in the chorus of "West Side Story" if he had been able to dance, which is like saying I could have made the US Olympic swim team if I had been able to siwm.

Barbara Levin:
Michael, I remember all of those shows. Sorry I don't have any pictures for you. I was in the King and I, it was such a big part of our summer experience. A few of us are planning a trip to the camp site in eary Movember. It still holds so many memories.

Rick Landman:
My first year was 1961 (I was about 4 feet tall and 9 years old) and I remember being in the King and I. I was something like the "number one son". I had no lines. I was the little boy who walked across the stage as everyone went aaahhh.

http://www.camptarigo.com/guest_new/public/img-1216863317.jpgI came there with others from Camp Alamar. I had a good time for the brief time I was there, and would like anyone who recognizes my photo or my name to write me, so we can catch up on old times, as well as new times since.Only the campers at Alamar would know the lengths I would go to to gain attention. We can discuss that later. I hope to hear from you,

Bubby: I'd love to see your reunion photos (especially the one of Elaine Halper). Can you scan and email them to RL? I'm sure that you were at camp during my last year, 1959; thanks to you my sisters used to show up on parents visiting weekend (see my nostalgia page for an explanation).

I spent 10 summers at Tarigo and it was a big part of my life. I have many great memories and think of it often, particularly as I have sent each of my 4 kids to overnight camp (and am now broke!) About 7 or 8 years ago, I took my family to Tarigo and walked around the deserted camp which was a bittersweet experience. After driving up Redkill Road I saw the Tarigo sign (the "A" was missing) and got chills when I saw it. It's nice to connect with so many familiar names.

so many great memories...I am reminded every summer when I go to my summer house in Fleischmanns...Seems so long ago especially when I have 3 children ages 16-20! but it also seems like yesterday. I am happy to say that I still stay in contact with some of the wonderful friends I made during those summers. I still am a pretty good athlete! Although no longer married I actually met my ex husband there...

David Wadro was one of our more memorable friends. Sadly, he was one of the younger TARIGOites to pass away in the 1970's. I remember that April 1st was his birthday and Wayne and I still call each other every year in memory of David. We tried to find Cindi, his sister to no avail. Did anyone keep in touch with Cindi Wadro? So Happy Birthday David! Welcome to cyberspace.

Just a quick hello to those I spent fun and interesting times with at Tarigo. Fond memories...I have taken my children to see the camp: my daughters saw the Rec Hall before it was torn down...we wandered inside and they could see signatures of those of us who passed through! This past summer I took my oldest daughter and my son to Woodstock and we stopped by the camp, went down to the lake...fun memories.

http://www.camptarigo.com/guest_new/public/t_img-1206395330.jpgI'd like to express my gratitude to Mrs. Landman for tricking Rick into going to camp, because otherwise we wouldn't have this terrific website. (To learn how she did it, read the transcript of Rick's monologue given at the 2005 Reunion.) I'd also like to express my relief upon learning that Freddy Berins made it safely out of Cuba after the revolution. (To learn about my anxiety, read my comments on page two of the Nostalgia link.) Finally, I'd like to express my shock at learning that during the 1970s Donny Fine and I lived in adjacent buildings on the same NYC street. We probably passed each other a hundred times. How could I have known it was him? You never knew what weight he'd show up at.
